The old saying that you only get what you pay for is true of this product, i thought ( wrongly ) that because the chest was not finished that it would be better quality than the other chests that were fully finished, i was wrong.The main box part was quite well made with decent joinery, but the lid was another matter, the slats are only fixed with 1 pin each end with large gaps between them, when you open the lid you can see daylight through the gaps in the slats, also the hinges are very poor quality, the first time i opened the lid the lids own weight almost tore the hinges off, not that the lid is heavy, it's not, just thin lightweight pine, i had to fit my own cord to stop the lid opening to far and that's something the maker should have thought of.One thing to mention, the pictures show the chest with wax stain not the unfinished chest you get.Overall i can't recommend this chest.I ordered this box to create my own memory box and I’m extremely happy with it. I think when you consider buying this box there are some things you need to know. The natural finish is perfect for decorating yourself. It needs a bit of rubbing down if you want to give it a really nice finish and ensure that no splinters are left. The arched lid is constructed with slats of wood and there are small gaps between the strips but this gives you your treasure chest look. The box itself is tacked together not glued and screwed so it’s not the strongest box in the world. The hinges are small but seem robust enough. If I was giving this to a child I might be tempted to replace them with bigger ones. Finally be sure you check your measurements as this is an A4 sort of size. Now having said all that it’s under £20, a really nice shape and when I’ve decorated it it’s going to look great and be perfect for my needs. I think if you go looking for boxes of this size this is comparatively good value for money and you can customise it for your own needs. I’m really happy with it and I will be even happier when I’ve worked some magic on it.Opened the catch to lift the lid and it came away from the box, it is only pushed in. The box is nice and the lid sits well on the box. On looking closer the lock and hinges are just pushed in and as it is soft wood they are not fitted very well and not secure. I'm going to change the hardware for something that screws in place.The box arrived on time and the quality is actually very good. However, the lid was completely detached and the 'push in' hinges had broken away from the box leaving 'claw marks' in the wood. The lock was also broken. It is a great pity that such a well constructed box has been let down by the finishing. I decided not to return it but to fit 'proper' hinges and a lock. Now the box looks great. If you purchase this box be prepared to al least fit new hinges as the push-in hinges are, in my opinion, completely unsuitable. Amazon would not let me make comments on the packaging.The box itself is OK I guess. It doesn't feel particularly sturdy but it'll be fine if you aren't planning to do much with it. I'm thinking about replacing the hinges at the back based on them being a) pretty thin looking and b) not even screwed on straight. And the catch at the front (from the product images and features table) looks like a hasp and staple kind of design which matches the design on the hinges at the back whereas what actually arrived was a really cheap little catch which is make of such thin metal that it bent out of shape from opening and closing the box one single time, so I'll be replacing that as well. Given how much they talk in the product description about quality and how they are better than the Chinese, it might have been good to follow through by actually using quality components, putting them together with care and actually delivering what they were advertising. Think twice before ordering anything from this company.
